The portrait vs a framed photograph: what's the actual difference

A photograph captures a moment. A painted portrait is a likeness: it's made from the moment, but the result is something that reads as a representation of the cat rather than a record of a particular afternoon. The lighting is normalised. The background is stripped back. The face is what you see, not the sofa arm or the kitchen counter or the pile of post in the background.

A framed photograph on a wall, looked at often enough, starts to show its limitations. You see the year it was taken. You see the camera angle. You see everything that was incidental to the image.
