But a good portrait of a French Bulldog is really about the face: the flat muzzle, the rolls of skin above it, the enormous dark eyes that always looked slightly astonished by the world. Your portrait takes 5–9 working days to print and post in the UK. We also ship internationally if you need it sent abroad.

The first days after losing a French Bulldog

The practical questions are unpleasant to face, and most people haven't had to think through them before. A few plain answers for UK owners:

• Phone your vet first. Most practices have an out-of-hours line. They will arrange collection, or guide you on bringing your dog to them. You don't need to rush. Staying with your dog for a while is allowed.
• Garden burial. Legal in the UK provided you own the land, the burial is at least 1.25m deep, and the dog had no notifiable disease. Use natural wrapping: cotton or wool, not plastic.
• Private cremation. Your vet can arrange this, or find a member near you at the Association of Private Pet Cemeteries and Crematoria (appcc.org.uk). Private cremation returns the ashes to you, usually in 7–14 days.
• Microchip record. Contact the chip database to mark your dog's record as deceased.
• Their things. The harness, the bed, the specific blanket they claimed. Keep them or don't. Both are fine.

Marking a Frenchie's life in small ways

The canvas is one way to keep them present. There are smaller ones too: the photo in the spot where their crate used to be; the name written somewhere permanent in a notebook or a family record; the story told, properly, to someone who never met them.
