Memorial portraits, painted from your photo
Small Goodbyes

Pet memorial gifts · sympathy & bereavement

A considered keepsake to send someone grieving a pet.

A painted portrait, made from one photo and a handful of stories. Ships direct and unbranded to the person grieving. Made with care in the UK, for dogs and cats.

Pet memorial gifts should carry the weight of the bond, not just fill a shelf. Most keepsakes you'll find online are either rushed and impersonal, or priced out of reach. We built Small Goodbyes as the middle ground, a considered memorial pet gift that arrives in days rather than months, and feels like it was made by someone who cared.

A Small Goodbyes portrait is painted from your own photo in oil, watercolour, charcoal, line or pastel, printed to order in the UK.

What makes a good pet memorial gift

The best pet memorial gifts are personalised to that specific animal, not generic, not interchangeable. They should last longer than a fortnight. They should require something of the giver, a photograph, a few sentences, because that effort is part of what makes them land. A meaningful gift in memory of a pet gives the household something to engage with every day, a portrait on the wall rather than a card in a drawer.

Pet remembrance gifts also need to survive the silence that follows the first wave of condolences. That means a physical object the household can return to. The portrait holds the dog's or cat's face: that's the test a painted canvas is designed to pass.

For a dog or a cat

We focus only on dogs and cats. That focus means the portraits are tuned for the two animals we know best. Dog memorials and cat memorials need slightly different registers: dog loss tends to change the household's daily structure; cat loss tends to be quieter but no less significant. Both deserve pet memorial gifts made with the same care.

The dog loss gifts page and the cat memorial gifts page go into the specifics for each.

Sending it to someone who is grieving

Most of our orders are placed by someone buying a gift in memory of a pet they didn't own themselves, for a parent, a sibling, a friend who has gone quiet after losing their animal. At checkout you can ship directly to the recipient's address; the package arrives unbranded, no promotional materials, just the canvas in a protective sleeve inside a plain outer box.

You complete the intake: a photograph of their pet and a few short prompts about the animal. Most people find that being asked for a photograph, in the days after a loss, is actually a welcome thing. It gives them something specific to do.

How it's made

We use AI tools to draft and illustrate, then we check every piece by hand before it reaches you. The canvas is rendered in a warm 19th-century oil-portrait style from the photograph you upload. If anything comes back and doesn't feel right, you tell us, and we rework it at no cost.

Who it's for

Most customers are in the first few months after losing their pet, or buying for someone who is. Some are commissioning the portrait for a parent who has just said goodbye to a long companion. Some are quietly preparing, knowing the moment is coming.

We don't use urgency timers, scarcity banners, or "only 3 left" messaging. You're not going to be hurried. The order stays with you until you're ready to place it.

Delivery

The canvas prints locally, UK orders print in the UK, so no cross-border customs delays. It follows in 5–9 working days. We also ship internationally, Ireland, the EU, the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan.
