Dog memorial
For the dog who followed you through the years.
A painted memorial portrait of your dog, from your photo.
Dogs leave a particular kind of silence when they go. They were always somewhere in the house, by the door when you came home, at your feet during supper, two steps behind you up the stairs. A dog memorial isn't about closure. It's about keeping that shape of them somewhere you can reach for.
A Small Goodbyes portrait is painted from your own photo in oil, watercolour, charcoal, line or pastel, printed to order in the UK.
What makes a dog memorial work
The specific details are what carry it. Not "he was a good boy" but "he used to line up the slippers by the back door like he was trying to tell me something". Not "she loved walks" but "the exact patch of sun she claimed at two in the afternoon". Our intake asks for those kinds of details, five short prompts, skip whichever don't land.
The portrait is built around what you share. It won't sound like a generic pet obituary because it isn't one.
Any breed, any age, any story
We've made memorials for old Labradors, young whippets cut short, rescues whose histories you only half knew, working collies, family mongrels, show dogs. Any breed, any age. The canvas adapts to what you send.
For a gift
You can commission a dog memorial for someone else, a parent, a friend, a partner. Enter their details in the intake, ship to their address. The canvas arrives unbranded. A simple, considered way to say: I saw what you lost.
How delivery works
Your portrait takes 5–9 working days to print and ship in the UK. We also ship internationally, Ireland, the EU, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and delivery varies by country, with shipping calculated live at checkout.
What to do if your dog dies at home in the UK
The practical questions arrive faster than the emotional ones, and most British dog owners haven't had to think about them before. A short, plain-spoken answer:
- Phone your vet first. Even outside hours, most practices have an answering service that will tell you what to do. They will collect, or arrange a collection, or guide you on bringing your dog in. There is no rush, staying with your dog for a while is allowed, and right.
- Garden burial. Burying a pet in your own garden is legal in the UK provided you own the property, the burial is more than 1.25m deep, and the dog had no notifiable disease. Wrap them in something natural, a cotton blanket, an old jumper. Do not use a plastic bag.
- Pet crematorium. If you'd rather, your vet can arrange a private cremation (your dog's ashes returned, usually in 7–14 days) or a communal one (ashes scattered at the crematorium garden). The Association of Private Pet Cemeteries and Crematoria lists members at appcc.org.uk. Our guides cover what pet cremation costs in the UK and what to do with the ashes afterwards.
- Records. If your dog was microchipped, contact the chip database to mark the record deceased. If they were on pet insurance, the policy ends from the date of death; some insurers ask for a vet's confirmation.
- The collar. Most families keep it. A few hang it where the lead used to live. Some bury it with the dog. There is no wrong answer here.
The Blue Cross Pet Bereavement line, 0800 096 6606, is free, UK-based, and specific to pet loss. They take calls from people who have just lost a dog, people who are anticipating it, and people whose dog died years ago. None of those are wrong reasons to phone.
Honouring a dog that has passed away
Beyond the canvas, there are quieter things families do: a photograph in a frame on the kitchen counter where their bowl used to be; a paw-print taken in clay before the cremation; a tree planted in the garden over a buried collar (our dog memorial garden ideas covers more); a charity donation in their name on the anniversary; the name added (gently, in pencil) to the list at the back of a family bible. The point of any of these is not to fix the loss. It's to give the loss somewhere to live in the household, somewhere visible, somewhere acknowledged, somewhere it isn't pretended away.
A small ceremony at home, with whichever family members were closest to the dog, can be enough. Light a candle. Read a eulogy aloud, even a short one (we have a guide for writing one). Pass the collar around. Say their name. Then sit, briefly, in the quiet that follows.
Memorial quotes for a dog
A short borrowed line is sometimes the right size for a card or a tribute caption. A few that hold their shape:
- "Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.", Orhan Pamuk
- "Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened.", Anatole France
- "Old dogs, like old shoes, are comfortable. They might be a bit out of shape and a little worn around the edges, but they fit well.", Bonnie Wilcox
- "He was the best of dogs. He was the best of dogs because he was ours," written by us, freely usable; mostly a reminder that you don't need a quote at all.
Questions
Questions, answered
What if the canvas doesn't look like them?+
We email you a preview before anything is printed. If it isn't right, tell us and we rework it. You're never charged for a print you haven't approved, and you can get a full refund any time before printing starts.
Is it really made by AI?+
We use AI to draft the portrait, then a person reviews every piece by hand before it reaches you. We don't auto-send anything. We never invent photos, clone voices, or generate video: only a painted-style portrait from the photo you give us.
How long does it take?+
Your portrait is made to order in the UK and posted within about 5–9 working days.
What photo should I use?+
Any clear photo works: any age, any angle, any camera. The painted style holds across coat colours and breeds. If you have one you love, that's the one to use.
Can I order this for someone else who's grieving?+
Yes. Enter what you know (the name, the details you remember) and we ship to their address. The canvas arrives unbranded, so it reads as a gift, not a purchase.
What happens to my photos?+
We never share or sell them. We delete the originals 90 days after your order.
