Personalisation, for us, means the painting has to look like this pet, their specific eye colour, their particular marking pattern, the slight cowlick above one ear. Not a template with a name overlaid.
How we personalise
You upload between three and twenty photos. We use the clearest face shot as the primary reference. The AI illustration tool draws on it, applying a 19th-century oil-painting style; the output is reviewed by us, then printed on a matte canvas and shipped locally to your address.
Our intake also asks for name, species, breed, and dates, these don't appear on the canvas itself (we deliberately don't print text onto the painting, keeping it in the frame of a real portrait).
What we keep consistent
The painted style is the brand. We don't offer Renaissance-king themes, superhero parodies, or cartoon styles. Every Small Goodbyes canvas lives in the same quiet painted register. It's one of the reasons customers choose us, for a dignified portrait, not a novelty.

What makes a personalised pet portrait good
A custom pet portrait worth keeping does three things at once: it captures the specific animal rather than the species, it keeps the pose dignified rather than cute, and it commits to one artistic register rather than mixing styles. Most personalised pet portraits fail on the second test, the customer asked for a portrait of their dog and received a portrait of any dog wearing a name. We resist that by anchoring every painting in your photograph's specific markings, posture, and gaze, then rendering them in a single style we've spent time on.
The art-historical reference for our house style is 19th-century oil portraiture: warm earth tones, visible brushwork, neutral background, the sitter centred and looking either toward or just past the viewer. It works equally well for a dog portrait, a cat, or any other animal whose face has structure to render. We don't do watercolours, royal-costume parodies, or pastel cartoons, partly because plenty of other UK customers and customer-painters do those well, partly because doing one thing properly is the choice we made when ordering the brand.

Is this a custom pet portrait, or a template?+
A custom pet portrait. The painting is drawn from your own photograph, so it carries your pet's specific markings, eye colour, and posture, not a stock animal with a name added. Every canvas is reviewed by a person before it prints.
Can you do a dog portrait from a photo? A cat?+
Yes to both. A dog portrait from a photo and a cat portrait from a photo are the same process here: you upload a clear photograph, we render it as a painted-style oil portrait in our house style, and it prints on canvas. It works for any pet whose face has structure to paint.
How good does my photo need to be?+
A clear, well-lit photo of their face works best, phone photos are fine. You can upload between three and twenty, and we use the sharpest face shot as the primary reference. If nothing we produce looks right, we rework it at no cost.
Will my pet's name be printed on the canvas?+
No. We deliberately keep text off the painting so it reads as a real portrait rather than a novelty print.
