The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has one of the most readable faces in the dog world. That broad forehead. The wide-set amber or dark eyes. The grin that got them called the "nanny dog", a nickname that's debated, but no Staffie owner finds it hard to believe.

What to do in the first days after losing a Staffie

The practical things arrive faster than you expect. A few plain answers:

• Ring your vet. Most practices have an out-of-hours line. They'll arrange collection or guide you to the next step. You don't need to rush.
• Garden burial. Legal in the UK on land you own, provided the burial is more than 1.25m deep and the dog had no notifiable disease. Wrap them in something natural: cotton, wool, an old jumper.
• Private cremation. Your vet can arrange this, or search the Association of Private Pet Cemeteries and Crematoria directory at appcc.org.uk for a member near you.
• Microchip record. If your Staffie was microchipped (and in the UK, dogs born after 6 April 2016 must be) contact the database to mark the record as deceased.
• The lead, the collar, the harness. Keep them if you want to. There's no correct answer here.

Keeping a Staffie's memory present

A canvas on the wall is one way. There are quieter ones too: the photo on the windowsill where they used to sit; the spot on the sofa that still carries the shape of them, at least for a while; the name added to the family record somewhere permanent. A charity donation to a Staffie-specific rescue, in their name, can feel like the right kind of continuation.

The point of a memorial isn't to resolve anything. A Staffie who pressed hard against your leg every morning leaves a real gap. A good memorial holds that gap honestly, without prettying it up.
